Frequently Asked Questions

Answer all of your questions

The answer is not simple. It is rare for someone to find a job or receive a job offer before he/she arrives in Australia; however, it’s possible. Landing a job before you arrive in Australia depends on two aspects – 1) Your skills. 2) Your network / people you know. Skills: If you have a skill that is niche / very specific, it improves your chances. It makes you more attractive to the recruiter / employers. Network: Lot of jobs in Australia are filled in through networking and internal references. If your network can refer you for a position, it improves your chances of being shortlisted for interview and possibly a job.
It is a commonly asked question to us. Lot of skilled migrants and international students are asked his question. When a recruiter / employer raises local experience question, they are referring to your ability to integrate with Australian work culture and interpersonal and communication skills. Local experience is NOT about your technical or core skills. Australian employers are more inclined to hire job seekers who demonstrates their cultural-fit. Read my e-book on “How to Find a Job in Australia without Local Experience” to learn more about how to respond to the local experience question.
It is another commonly asked question by migrants and international students/graduates. It is always challenging to build a network from scratch. But it is possible. Networking or building relationships is incredibly important to find a job and accelerate career.
Three ways to build a network:
a) Pursue / Reignite Hobby: If you search for a meet-up based on your hobby / interest, you will come across many. Join the group, start attending meet-up and share a common interest. You will be less intimidated by networking as you share a common interest with the group members
b) Industry Connections: Check out the meetups that aligns with your industry background. Attend meetups, have business focused conversations, and learn about industry trends.
c) Join a Professional Association: There are associations for various industry and sectors in Australia; for example: Australian Computer Society, Engineers Australia, CPA Australia and more. Join them, attend their networking events and build network with fellow professionals.

Australia is a very competitive market for job seekers. Specially during CVOID 19 times, the market is flooded with great candidates. It could be any or all the following reasons for not landing interviews

b. Your resume is average: Though there are many theories around how many seconds recruiter / employer spends on reading resume differs between two individuals; however, it is absolutely necessary to have a resume with > clear employment goal, notable accomplishments, skills alignment and outlining relevant work experience. There are no specific rules about the number of pages in a resume, but 3-page resumes are also accepted in Australian market.
c. Your application is not tailored: That is correct. I know you have heard this before, and I am no different. Your resume and cover letter must be tailored for specific roles. You need to demonstrate why you are a great candidate for the role.
d. You are applying for wrong job: It is possible that you are applying for a job where you do not meet all the skills requirement. If you do not meet more than 75% of the requirements, think before submitting application. Pick up the phone call and speak to the hiring manager, explain your rationale, and then make the decision.
